Murmurs, BBC Audio Drama Awards Finalist

MURMURS - BEST PODCAST OR ONLINE AUDIO DRAMA FINALIST 2021

OVER AND OUT - BEST USE OF SOUND FINALIST 2021

Believe it or not, after our very exciting nominations in January, Murmurs has reached the finals of the BBC Audio Drama Awards in both its categories! If you missed it, Murmurs is the supernatural anthology podcast produced by BBC Radio Cymru Wales and BBC Sounds of which I wrote Episode 1: Over And Out.

It’s astonishing to think that our little show has come this far. Its success in this awards process is down to our producer, James Robinson, most of all, who put the whole thing together. Enormous thanks are also owed to Ella Watts, who worked with BBC Sounds on the project and had a huge hand in assembling the list of writers for consideration. I continue to be honoured to have been part of that list, particularly as the other people on it are so spectacularly talented. They are Jen and Chris Sugden, Janina Matthewson, Beth Crane, Eno Mfon, Rob Valentine, Jesse Schwenk and Greer Ellison, and all of their episodes are things of beauty and fully deserve your attention at the ‘listen’ button above.

I’m particularly delighted that my episode, Over and Out, is a finalist in the Best Use of Sound category. We had the advantage of being the first episode, and as such were everyone’s first exposure to the weird, warped and wonderful world of Murmurs, but the production and sound team really did do amazing things to my script. I owe a huge debt of thanks to the episode’s line producer David Devereux, with whom I developed the story’s framing right from the off, and who I’m delighted to see gets a piece of the Best Use of Sound nomination. The others who made the thing what it is are composer Mary Epworth and sound designer Catherine Robinson, who are both geniuses in their respective fields. Finally, credit must go to the cast, who made some of the best sounds of the episode: Peter Bankole, Katrina Allen, Helene Maksoud and Adam Courting.

The award ceremony is going to be a digital affair, predictably, on Friday 26th March, after which we’ll know who takes the crown and who goes home in a doggy bag full of old prawns. Cross all your digits for Team Murmurs!
