Tom Writes Daredevil: Radio Mode

MARVEL MOVE’S DAREDEVIL: TERMINAL DEGREE

RADIO MODE: WHHK by TOM CROWLEY

He’s the Man With No Fear, they’re the Hosts With No Listeners! WHHK is a new mini-sitcom contained within Marvel Move’s thrilling audio-immersive adventure, Daredevil: Terminal Degree, created by Tom Crowley.

This takes a bit of explaining, so hold on tight. You’ve heard of Zombies, Run!, right? The viral smash-hit running app slash game slash radio drama? Well as its output has become more varied, the app has been rebranded as ZRX. Zombies, Run! is now just one of the many shows and short adventures published on the app, alongside a host of others, including the New Adventures strand, which I’ve contributed to before, remember? And now, an officially licensed series of interactive Marvel Universe adventures, featuring Captain America, Thor, the X-Men and many more of your favourites, is on there too! The suite of shows is called Marvel Move and it’s been put together with a lot of love and care by some extremely talented writers and producers with evident affection for the source material. You can sign up today, go on an adventure with one of your favourite heroes and get fit while you do it! Just click on the link above or search ZRX on your phone’s app store, then you can sign up to the Marvel Move monthly subscription within the app. Then all you have to do is get your trainers on and get running!

So where do I fit into all this?

Good question! Well, as you’ll see, one of the most recent new adventures is Daredevil: Terminal Degree, an action-thriller set in the fictional Harwell College of Law, written by the fantastic Bilal Dardai. It’s a great, pacey, punchy thriller with lots of actual punching in it and tasty guest appearances from loads of Matt Murdock-affiliated characters. And to flesh out the world of Harwell College, the team at ZRX wanted to add an old familiar feature from Zombies, Run! called Radio Mode.

Picture it: you’re out on your run and you’ve set yourself the target of finishing the new episode of Daredevil: Terminal Degree. You get there and you feel great. So great, in fact, that you want to keep running! Well, just for such an eventuality, the ZRX team provide little extra mini-episodes that play in after you finish the main event, to reward your persistence! And to make up something new for those miniature morsels, they called in me, Tom Crowley. And what did I do? Why, I made up a miniature sitcom, of course! Give me a cubic metre of air and I’ll most likely fill it with a sitcom.

Thus was born WHHK, Harwell College’s student radio station, and its two hosts, Cat González (Juliana Gutiérrez Arango) and Mason (Galen Arnett). They talk about campus life, their families, backgrounds, challenges, loves, hates and everything in-between, filling in the hungry airwaves with chatter. But before long, it becomes clear that the conspiracy that Daredevil’s investigating, the one that’s engulfing Harwell College, is not so far away. Soon Cat and Mason become embroiled in their own little conspiracy drama, and the effects of the main storyline start to spill over into their cosy little broadcasting broom cupboard. Will they survive the events of Daredevil: Terminal Degree? And more importantly, will it be exciting enough to attract some more listeners?

It was a joy to be asked in again by the ZRX team. Working with Matt Wieteska and Ella Watts at ZRX was a joy as always and it was an extra thrill to work directly with Marvel’s own editorial team. What’s more, as well as creating my own self-contained comedy within Hell’s Kitchen, I was also lucky enough to get to write for some of the show’s classic mainline characters, including Foggy Nelson, Black Widow and even the Man With No Fear himself, Matt Murdock. I implore you to push yourself that extra half-mile and run all the way to Radio Mode at the end of your latest episode of Daredevil: Terminal Degree. Cat and Mason will be waiting on WHHK -

- LEGALLY SOUND!

So have I created a new show within the Marvel Universe? Technically, yes! I’m not holding my breath for the Cat and Mason Disney Plus show, but if it happens, hey Marvel, I’m available!
